Important summary of UK debate putting feminists against trans people - one I can’t fathom.https://www.buzzfeed.com/patrickstrudwick/two-transgender-employees-quit-guardian-transphobia …

Very sorry to see the comments under your tweet - I'm as baffled by them as I am by the UK Guardian's official stance. Trans rights are human rights; as a cis feminist woman, I see no contradiction. If our empathy doesn't extend to trans women, it doesn't extend very far indeed.

No-one is saying trans rights are not human rights. What is of question is the trumping of gender identity over biological sex in every situation whether its intimate personal care or shared space for rape victims. What even is gender identity? Is it fact or a belief system?

I mean, some people in my mentions have been hinting that trans rights don't matter to them at all. But to your point, it's crucial to understand that trans women share our challenges, and being part of a female safe space is just as life-threateningly important to them.

What challenges are those specifically, and do they extend beyond women in the first world?

I'm going to repeat myself but: women want safe spaces in the first place because some men are toxic. Those same men target trans women as 1) women, and 2) specifically as trans women if they learn it is so, and assault, rape & murder them routinely. Trans women are women.

No. Women have the right to privacy and consent over their bodies. We seperate changing in schools at puberty not because "some boys are toxic" but because teenage girls (and boys) should not be forced to undress with opposite sex. Is really basic.
