This is such a tricky one. Honestly, I don’t think I’d book a room in a dorm if travelling solo, but realistically a lot of women don’t have the choice.

I’ve stayed in female dorms plenty of times. I would never stay in a mixed sex dorm - the idea that I’d have to disclose my previous trauma is a horrifying one.

Yes, I absolutely agree. Similarly I’d say it would be horrifying for a trans-woman whose passport still identifies her as a man to have to share a male dorm. I don’t think there’s an easy answer.

If trans-women don’t feel safe in male dorms the answer is to either fight against male violence so it stops being an issue or ask the YHA for mixed sex or TW only rooms. Women should not lose safe accommodation because of men.

Trans-women have as much right to feel safe as CIS women and I don’t see how either of the options you propose are safe.

Why is a transwomen room unsafe?

It wouldn’t be, apologies, although would ostracise needlessly the vast majority of non-violent trans women. Also, given that 0.3% of the population identify as trans-gender I can’t really see YHA’s run on a budget going for it.

Why would self-ID transwomen be unsafe in a men's dormitory, but women safe in a dormitory open to any male who says "I'm a woman"?

I’m not saying either would be safe. I’m saying it’s a difficult situation with no obvious answer and that all women, cis and trans have an equal right to safety.

Its really not difficult. You have single sex dorms segregated by sex (not gender identity). If someone does not feel comfortable sharing with members of their own sex they can book a smaller room on own or with their friends.
