Maya - absolutely nowhere in that policy does it say that people have to disclose "the details" of abuse to "earn" any rights, and It really is quite irresponsible of you to spread this kind of nonsense.

There seems to be a bit of confusion here. As I read it YHA are restricting transgender as below, not self ID. But on the request for exemptions this surely requires some form of personal disclosure?pic.twitter.com/YIDs5FLxrj

Indeed Maya's characterization of all transgender people as 'men' is another part of her tweet which is both wrong and offensive.

Clearly women can identify as transgender too
. As the EHRC has clarified sex (not gender identity) is a protected characteristic in the Equality Act. https://www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/our-work/news/our-statement-sex-and-gender-reassignment-legal-protections-and-language …pic.twitter.com/4h5k5jmhr9

Having the protected characteristic 'gender reassignment' does not mean someone has changed sex. Do you think the EHRC are wrong and offensive about this too George?

This is what the EHRC says (and its what the Equality Act says). YHA have got this wrong, putting girls & women who don't want to share sleeping accommodation with male strangers at a disadvantage. Why is it offensive or wrong to point that out?pic.twitter.com/IqhaYf3bJ8

This passage makes a distinction between trans discrimination and sex discrimination. It does not justify your position at all.

Yes there are 9 protected characteristics, everyone has more than one. But if you have a facility that is for female people only then it excludes males regardless of the other protected characteristic s they may have.

It excludes Jewish men, but it's not religious discrimination. It excludes elderly men, but it's not age discrimination etc... And it excludes men with the protected characteristic "gender reassignment" but it's not discrimination against them on that basis.

If an institution which serves *both* men and women does not make any reasonable accomadation for people with a transgender identity to be included overall, then that *is* discrimination based on the PC of gender reassignment

That can mean offering the option of mixed/unisex/single occupancy facilities so no one is excluded (as YHA can easily do). Forcing women to share communal spaces where they are undressing and vulnerable with male people is not required or reasonable.
