So @YHAOfficial has gone gender self-ID. Any male can self-declare as a woman and check in to single-sex shared accommodation. If a woman want to avoid sharing with male strangers she has to tell them about her sexual assault. 14 days in advance. And they’ll see what they can dohttps://twitter.com/tempie321/status/1160681731856297984 …

This is such a tricky one. Honestly, I don’t think I’d book a room in a dorm if travelling solo, but realistically a lot of women don’t have the choice.

I’ve stayed in female dorms plenty of times. I would never stay in a mixed sex dorm - the idea that I’d have to disclose my previous trauma is a horrifying one.

Yes, I absolutely agree. Similarly I’d say it would be horrifying for a trans-woman whose passport still identifies her as a man to have to share a male dorm. I don’t think there’s an easy answer.

If trans-women don’t feel safe in male dorms the answer is to either fight against male violence so it stops being an issue or ask the YHA for mixed sex or TW only rooms. Women should not lose safe accommodation because of men.

Trans-women have as much right to feel safe as CIS women and I don’t see how either of the options you propose are safe.

YHA have smaller rooms - singles, doubles or for a group of friends ( can be mixed sex). "Single sex" dorms are not the only thing on offer. If someone doesn't want to be in communal accommodation with strangers of own sex they have other options, which don't require disclosure

It's not really about the right to feel safe. If I make bespoke demands of a service provider on the grounds that otherwise I don't 'feel safe', I cannot reasonably expect those demands to be met. The issue here is simple: do we allow female only services? I vote yes.
