As a parent and a cub scout leader I wrote to
@matthyde, and went to see the team at Scout HQ with the@Transgendertrd pack http://bit.ly/GNCpack & safeguarding concerns https://www.transgendertrend.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Safeguarding-Concerns-Transgender-Schools-Guidance.pdf … I am pleased that The Scout Association has reviewed its guidance2 replies 4 retweets 36 likesShow this thread -
As a trans woman with 40 years of safeguarding experience and outdoor activity instructor experience I'm glad that the Scouts rewrite of their trans policy stresses that they are inclusive of trans children emphasising the importance of their inclusion, privacy and respect.

Replying to @nellstock @MForstater and
However I'm concerned by trans hostil reporting by trans hostile in print and social media twist of the actual policy: 'What about safeguarding? As with all young people, it is a safeguarding issue if a trans member is being abused, harassed or discriminated against.'

'If you believe that a young trans member’s welfare is at risk, it would be appropriate to disclose that they are trans if it is relevant to the situation, in line with Scouting’s Young People First Yellow Card code of practice and protocols.'

Yes. This is the new guidance. The old guidance barely mentioned safeguarding, said to promise complete confidentiality and refer the child to Mermaids, and only work with parents "supportive" of the child's self diagnosis.pic.twitter.com/FqXWwQCJJd

I'm interested in how you would work with a non supportive parent and a child with whom you'd disclosed that they were trans against their wishes. Who would you support? A parent hostile to their child being trans or the child?

As the guidance says If you have any safeguarding concerns as a Scout Leader you should contact the safeguarding team. Working in partnership with families is fundamental to safeguarding. That is Scouting's statutory responsibility. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/779401/Working_Together_to_Safeguard-Children.pdf …pic.twitter.com/j81rkbBYln

I'm fully aware of child and person centred safeguarding procedures. It's actually one of my professional duties. I'm glad you've clarified that you understand them too. It's a shame none of the reportage on this issue mentions this.
