I want to be inclusive as possible, but I don't think self-ID should be the policy. It's at odds with what the law says. There are ways to welcome genuine trans women (eg require EVERYONE swimming at the ladies' pond to show ID when they first use it) without opening to abuse. /1https://twitter.com/GoonerProf/status/1131096819503640576 …

The trouble w this solution is that transitioning is a personal journey. It does not necessarily involve any hormones or surgery to change ID or legal sex. So Q comes to whether in spaces where ppl are naked/half dressed &
expect to encounter only
, should
be allowed?2 replies 1 retweet 20 likes -

It's my suggested compromise. After all if you have lived the last 50 years as a woman and no one even knows you were born male it's pretty harsh to exclude you from the Pond just because you haven't had bottom surgery or whatever.

There is a safe inclusive space for transwomen already - the mixed pond. There is no need for the women only (or men only) ponds to be changed from single sex.

Yes exactly. In any situation where there is a men's, women's, mixed/unisex/accessible option there is no need to compromise women's privacy and dignity, by saying that people w penises (sorry to be crude) have the right to be in intimate spaces where women don't expect them.

I'm not sure I agree mixed spaces are safe for trans women. Trans women are hugely vulnerable to attack usually by cis men. Plus they still have the headache of where to change. Few cubicles at ponds.

Most spaces are mixed
restaurants, shops, hotels, work, parks etc... single sex is the exception rather than norm & i don't think crime statistics bear this out. In any case we should ask men to be more accepting of gender nonconformity, not offer women as human shields
