The thing is 90% of people if they said what they think: that there is a a compassionate case for treating some people who are male as women in some social and/or legal situations, but this is not the same as *being* a woman in every sense - would be branded a TERF
So either they don't say what they think out loud, because they are scared of this reaction, or they haven't thought too much about it much and just assume that those branded "TERF"s must be extremists with views that really are abominable, rather than labelled as "witches"
I've seen this work particularly with young people, who have been given the idea that bring a "TERF", is like being a racist or a facist, and so will not entertain any ideas or argument that others have labelled "TERFy"
But it also works on busy, analytic, wonkish types who ought to have better defenses against thought terminating cliches. They say "the debate is toxic, TRAs Vs TERFs" and they fail to notice "TERF" is what is bring used to close down rational discussion
