I backed the funding campaign to support people's right to express their views about gender self-ID. I don't have set views on the issue, + don't know the details of the case. But working through the pros+cons requires space for reasoned debate https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/lost-job-speaking-out … @MForstater

I think a couple imp notes: 1. It appears this was a decision not to renew a contract (not a “firing” mid-contract), and 2. CGD has a pretty clear set of values on this issue. Not renewing a consultant that openly espouses values in conflict with an org’s seems reasonable.pic.twitter.com/plF6swLe4G

Do read my article Joshua. It's not in conflict w the value of hiring people with the full 'spectrum of gender identities'. It argues that sex and gender identity are different, and open policy dialogue needed on how to protect human rights based on bothhttps://medium.com/@MForstater/international-development-lets-talk-about-sex-eb9de927c787 …

I did read the article, and followed the tweets in question over recent months. If CGD were to live its values and hire transgendered women, I wonder how they would feel it a welcoming work environment for that woman, as you openly campaign vs her right to use the same 1/2

toilets, question whether she is taking the space of women (as you define them) in panels, etc. If you made equivalent statements about other types of identity that are (now) slightly less marginalized, I don’t anticipate the same groundswell of support 2/2

Orgs shld be able to be inclusive of ppl who believe that everyone has an innate gender identity & those who don't. Just as ppl w different religions can work together side. I dont claim a gender identity, but I will treat ppl w respect if their gender id is important to them 1/

At the same time I think it is necessary and important to have clear policy debate (& equality analysis) on proposals which make previously single *sex* spaces, sports, programmes etc mixed sex on the basis of gender identity.
