@boodleoops describes gender identity is used to refer to a quasi-metaphysical property or essence that is fixed, unchanging, entirely subjective and unfalsifiable. independent of both bio sex, & gendered socialisation. Mystical seems like a fair summary of that concept.
Having gender dysphoria and feeling that the best way to cope with that is to live in the social role of the opposite sex is not the same as literally thinking that men can become women, or that all women share a common feeling of womanhood (i.e. a gender identity)
