But I often hear, anecdotally, that there is a real fear amongst the middle classes in some countries (esp. South/Central America) that exchange of bank account information will be leaked to criminals and create theft/kidnapping risk.

I don't have the first hand knowledge or experience to say whether this is correct or well-grounded, but it does seem to be widely believed. To stress: I'm not talking about the rich: just middle class professionals.

Anecdotally, I have been told by charities and funders who support human rights defenders and investigative journalists that they do it via offshore accounts, in order to keep those people's financial affairs insulated from their govts knowledge...pic.twitter.com/RZzVRSVJzK
