When I buy a fridge, why aren't I taxes on imputed fridge services? I could set up a business to rent out fridges. Are we subsidising owners of durable goods?

Getting rid of capital gains tax relief for primary residences seems more obvious. Is there any good reason not to? (other than yelps from homeowners?)
