But I don’t see why you have to refuse to acknowledge their womanhood in normal life to do that.

Because the places that women and girls get assaulted and harassed are *normal life*!!! At school. At work. In churches. At sports centres. On dates. In bars. On trains. In lifts. At conferences...

I honestly am very concerned about anything we can do to prevent abuse & assault of women and girls. I just don’t see how saying trans women are not women does that. If a woman feels threatened by a trans person, they don’t need to get in a car with them.

I've just been told by a scout leader that if a 15 year old girl does not want to share a tent with a 17 year old boy with gender dysphoria who identifies as a girl then she is being transphobic. "A transgirl is a girl". Girls are being taught to put up and shut up (again)

Good example! I wouldn’t force a child to share a tent with someone they don’t want to. If someone doesn’t feel safe or comfortable they should know they will be listened to. But I don’t see why you have to call this person a boy to achieve that.

Because that is why the girl does not want to share a tent w him. He may be perfectly nice in everyway. Not threatening. But I think she has that right. It does not have to be handled in a way that humiliates anyone. eg could ask kids/parents to choose mixed or single sex tent.

I totally agree! All sounds like really sensible solutions. But don’t you think it could be handled in a way that avoids publicly saying that this child is a boy?

Yes i think it could in scouts (because it is mixed). It could be handled sensitively to meet the needs of both the transgender male child and the girls. But not in Guides which is historically single sex, but has now been changed to single 'gender'.https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6222859/Guide-leader-says-sacked-telling-bosses-new-transgender-policies-pose-risk.html …

I don’t know how that convo went, and tbh I don’t think the daily mail is a reliable source. In general I think you can protect girls (in the ways we’ve described) without being transphobic. I do think misgendering people is transphobic. Let’s talk more in person! :)

Me either Arthur. I dont tweet stories that are in the Mail unless I check out & know the source is reliable. If we define recognising that men are men as transphobic then we undermine safety of women & girls. Being honest does not mean we cannot respect & protect trans people
