You can colour me totally surprised that the good people of development twitter (at least most who've chatted with me) say they believe that male people can be woman, in some real sense. And that insisting we need a word for female people is old hat (and mean and not inclusive).

I think a majority of development professionals consider themselves to be socially inclusive. Meaning they aren’t biologically essentialist, they can see the spectrum of gender and consider trans women to be women?

their place on a panel would be encouragd as they wouldn’t be seen as cis male. Trans exclusionary radical feminism is damaging & perpetuates discrimination. If someone tells you something about their ID, believe them. It has no negative consequences for you to believe and accept

Right but "gender identity" is not the same as sex. If someone tells you they are a transwoman that means they are male. So I can't possibly at the same time believe they are a woman. Because women are not male.

Flo - if someone tells you about their gender identity do you believe it tells you their sex?

I don’t believe their sex matters to me? I see their gender identity I don’t need to see their genitals? Trans women, like cis women, come in lots of different shapes and sizes, a range of sex characteristic expressions which spans across masculine and feminine

Flo we cannot *see* someone's gender identity! And yes we don't want to see their genitals! But in both cases we can ask (and be clear why & what we are asking). Do you not think that sometimes it is relevant to know someone's sex?

(also it is usually obvious what sex an adult is, without asking, or examining their genitals. We can't help noticing - - it is impossible to know what gender someone identifies as without asking them)
