I've got a Q for my male twitter friends who have pledged not to appear on all male panels - if u were invited on a panel w Pip Bunce - one of FT's top 100 female champions of women in biz & another guy would u say yes or call the organisers & say sorry i don't do #manels?pic.twitter.com/MUVq0lZ7Ov

If Bunce feels in whole or in part a woman, then he would count as one. But I feel like one could make reasoned arguments either way, and that's ok. Seems to me the point of the pledge is to be effective in the 99% of cases where there is not room for reasoned argument.

Thanks for being brave and taking the plunge with an answer Matt! As you know I disagree!

This is Q at one end of a spectrum, when poss general rules break down in what might be called singularities. What of people with no binary gender? Or self identifying as female, transgender or undertaking treatment? From info you provide doubt cross dressing by itself qualifies.

As someone who’s recently taken the pledge I wanted to add my thoughts. If someone sees themselves as a woman (or nonbinary) I’ll take that on face value. I’m not sure if it’s helpful to rehash all the arguments on this debate here but wanted to let you know my approach

Thanks Robert. Of course it is polite to respect people's identity at face value. But I think there is a Q on what ppl think the pledge (& by extension other places formally/informally reserved for women) are for though....

          Replying to @MForstater @robertnpalmer and

I think it is to say "As a man I will use my influence to encourage organisers to bring a woman in, if necessary by giving up my place". If there is a male NB person on the panel (eg Edward Lord https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/07/30/gender-equality-campaigner-defends-freemason-membership/ …) I don't think this satisfies the condition of having a woman

I think it's about fighting against lazy programming that leads to all-male panels and overlooks qualified panelists who aren't men. My gut says that someone who is non-binary doesn't fit into either "male" or "female" and so wouldn't make it a manel.
