It gets boring when people just trot out entrenched positions and don't listen to each other. But talking and really listening is always good. At the moment I feel too many people are fighting yesterday's battles and not looking at new realities.

I agree-not going to events because you know you'll disagree with someone isn't the way to move the debate forward. If i followed that rule, I'm not sure I'd ever leave the IFS building! Instead, we need to get more people from different spheres in the same conversation

Yes, and I would say be as open about those conversations as possible. Maybe the FT wrote about who refused to go because they could not write about what was said?

Not sure I agree - when people have publicly entrenched positions, open discussion may be very difficult without the Chatham House rule.

It's an issue we always grapple with. I always prefer open debate, but plenty of people say it makes them less open. Perhaps we should get better at debating ideas & worry less who idea belongs to.

It is ludicrous to organise a "festival of tax" and seek to discuss matters of transparency and accountability and public engagement and then declare it chatham house.

I confess I don’t see the outrage here. I often find the Chatham House rule useful for frank policy discussions, and your organisation seems to agree:pic.twitter.com/KXYoTTpolq

Horses for courses. A small roundtable where people taking first steps very different to a self-declated 'festival of tax'. Our equiv FTM conference in summer was not only Chatham house but key speeches recorded and uploaded to web.

Just st to be clear, I think there is a place for the Chatham House rule and that anyone can have a meeting with whomsoever they choose, on their own terms. The problem seems to be claiming it as a ‘Tax Festival’. Talking is always good but the PR from all sides gets in the way.

I thought that was a naff bit of branding! Unless there are tents & mud or a light show (or at the very least @jeremydcape playing piano) its not a 'festival'. In practice it was interesting panels & breakout discussions. i.e.'a conference'. I agree CH rule has its place

I think 10 years ago non CH would have been a scarier place ( ooh what will my clients/ colleagues think of what I am saying ). Now world has moved on a bit eg I have no issues openly supporting many of labours tax rising policies in 2017 manifesto.

Fits my exp based on many conversations with tax people - there's support for measures/policies that are "progressive/redistributive". But this does not emerge if people don't feel safe to talk. So CH has a role, engendering more trust, thus allowing wider open expression.
