Think I was watching, David, rather than in Hansard. Although my memory's not what it used to be (iirc)...

Its a serious question though. There are a lot of inflated expectations on this topic https://www.cgdev.org/publication/can-stopping-tax-dodging-multinational-enterprises-close-gap-development-finance …. The idea that beneficial ownership registers in the OTs will bring in 10bn a year to the UK is a new one. Do you think its true (where is it from?) or was it a mistake?

My guess is possibly from here? http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Documents/TaxHavenCostTRLLP.pdf … (although this isn't an estimate of the revenue impact of BO registers in the OTs, and is not taken seriously as an estimate of UK offshore revenue losses)

Possibly. But I don't recall seeing it cited or mentioned in the debate, unlike work from Christian Aid. So still an open point?

Indeed. I just don't want @HelenGoodmanMP to think I am expecting her to be my research assistant! She must know where she got the figure from and I hope she clarifies (or corrects if it was just a mistake). We've looked in Hansard. Its not there.

And others - Alex, Nick @simonpkirkland might also want to say whether they think the idea of the UK raising £10bn as a result of BO registers in the OTs is reasonable, or possibly just a misunderstanding?

I don't recognise the number, so couldn't comment on whether it derives from a reasonable methodology or data. Although everyone else seems keen to! It doesn't appear to have played any policy role though, or to have travelled beyond a single PQ in the UK.
