Today, with the authority vested in me as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I conferred the National Honour of GCFR on His Excellency , and the GCON on His Excellency .

Deep appreciation and gratitude must go to General (Dr.) Yakubu Gowon, the founding father of the NYSC, who conceived the idea and brought it to fruition on May 22, 1973. It is a solid legacy that has stood the test of time and proved its worth to the country.

The NYSC, on its part, has brought great benefits, fostering national unity, and breaking down ethnic divisions. The many marriages contracted over the years by Corps members, cutting across the boundaries of ethnicity and religion, are, in no small measure, proof of this.

The NYSC has, over the decades, afforded young Nigerians the platform & opportunity to make meaningful contributions in various spheres of national life. We acknowledge the contributions of members to our electoral system, Social Investment Programme, and our COVID-19 Response.

I have directed the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Federal Civil Service Commission, and the Honourable Minister of Education to ensure implementation of these employment and scholarship offers.

52 of them received Presidential Honours Awards, while 13 are physically challenged former members who have been recognized under the NYSC Hope Alive programme. We are grateful for their service to the nation, and their labour shall not be in vain.

The 65 former National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members we honoured in Abuja today, in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the NYSC, will be awarded scholarships to study up to Doctorate degree level at any University of their choice within Nigeria.

The late Prelate Emeritus Mbang was indeed a spiritual colossus at home & abroad: the longest-serving Leader, Methodist Church Nigeria; first Methodist President, Christian Association of Nigeria; first Black President, World Methodist Council, among other pioneering positions.

In June 2019, I assented to the Suppression of Piracy & Other Maritime Offences Act, 2019 (SPOMO Act), passed by the National Assembly, and which aims to prevent and suppress Piracy, Armed Robbery and other unlawful acts against any ship lawfully operating in the Gulf of Guinea.

I'm pleased with the successes being recorded in tackling piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. Nigeria remains committed to spearheading these efforts. Through the Deep Blue Project, launched in June 2021, invested $195 million in security boats, vehicles and aircraft.

The last Trooping & Presentation of Colours Parade by was held in 2007. Since then, a lot has changed: new units have been established & operationalized, in addition to the fact that existing colours have been extensively used & are hence deserving of retirement.

The quantum of military platforms inducted since 2015 has enabled troops to take the battle to terrorists & criminals, particularly in North-East, resulting in recapture of territories held by insurgents. Our efforts have indeed paid-off with records of unprecedented successes.

The Nigerian Army has acquired hundreds of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, Troops Carrying Vehicles, Utility Vehicles, Tanks, Armoured Personnel Carriers, in addition to large numbers of supporting artillery guns, machine guns, rifles, and ammunition.

The Nigerian Army has, in line with my resolve to cater for the families of deceased personnel, implemented a welfare system that has provided Army scholarships to over 50,000 children and wards of personnel who died in active service, from 2015 to date.

Since 2015 when I was sworn in as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I have ensured the recruitment of more than 60,000 soldiers from Depot Nigerian Army, apart from thousands commissioned from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

When we came to office in May 2015, the fighting power of our military was at a low ebb. Eight years later, the story has changed significantly for the better, in every area: fighting power, training, operations, manpower, remuneration and welfare, maintenance efficiency.
