Encampments in SF, if they have to exist, can be well-organized supportive places like the models we have from 1906. They don't have to be regimented detention sites. I fear this show of authority may be an effort to create a jail-like prototype camp. We have to do better, fast!https://twitter.com/MLNow/status/1255598401925742592 …

A phalanx of police cars with lights flashing were on-scene at a huge homeless camp near the Asian Art museum. Residents say they were told to stay in their tents or risk arrest due to a 'curfew.' But there is no curfew. The difference between 1906 and today is that the homeless encampment next to the Asian Art Museum is being flanked by 50 drug dealers peddling Heroin, Fentanyl and Meth. And many of the residents of said encampment are struggling with addiction. Apples and Oranges.

The people in that encampment are being characterized as victims to be protected from crime, as a pretext for actually treating them worse than jail inmates.

I've been to jail. They aren't being treated as badly. But, I agree that they need bathrooms, garbage cans, hand washing stations and continued efforts from the police and follow up from the DA to arrest and prosecute organized drug dealers preying on this population.

In jail I'm sure many things were awful but were you zipped inside a tent overnight? Yes to services and resources, yes to helping residents create and maintain their own boundaries on their terms, with recourse to the genuine protection of the laws, not preemptive punishment.
