Understanding why WSDOT and the conventional wisdom is wrong about traffic is the path to much smarter, cleaner and more equitable transportation. If you build for cars you get cars. And if you don’t, people can and will make other choices.

This is exactly what we were talking about when we wrote our report on viadoom. Urban highways concentrate traffic and create new chokepoints that harm mobility for all users. It’s happening now.

WSDOT claims that it could not predict that the tunnel would create more traffic problems. Maybe we should not take take advice from highway builders about how to ensure mobility in urban places?
