I was prepared for the onslaught of new dc daycare germs but going 2 for 2 on covid exposure on the first day of daycare was not on my list. Across nyc and dc were now at 2 closures within 3 weeks - this is unsustainable 🙃

Health starts where people live, learn, work, and play. We cannot expect people to get better without addressing the social determinants of health—such as housing insecurity, poverty, trauma, etc.—first. Treatment may not be what people need most if their basic needs aren’t met.

In NYC (& I'm sure most places), homeless outreach services are largely broken. Workers focus on "taking names" rather than ensuring folks can access the services they want, and in the end cannot offer what people are looking for: safe, affordable, housing.

So how do we address this? 1. Stop using "service resistance" as a way to dismiss the legitimate issues unhoused people have with the shelter they're offered. 2. Stop conflating "shelter" and "housing," and call out city leaders who elide the two. Question "offers of shelter."
