The real victory will happen if I can justify using Ishi’s declaration, “hansu saltu!” (“so many white people!”), which he said after seeing the beach for the first time in 1911, as the epigraph for this chapter on coastal aesthetics.

notes from Maeve (2/2): “Yesterday I saw someone wearing a graphic t-shirt that had a print of an American flag made out of surfboards on it. Seeing the shirt was a real life example of settler colonialism appropriating surfing in a nationalistic sense.”

notes from Maeve 1/2: “2nd wave feminism developed in the 60s and persisted thru the 70s in attempt to sever women from their domestic ties. 3rd wave arose in the 90s and aimed to make feminism intersectional, to account for diff in class, race, gender.”

To be honest I’m not sure that writing about coastal California in the middle of Washington’s winter is the best thing for me.

My “Surfing and Empire in the Pacific” class discussed the use of the term “underserved” today in ref to the laborers in surf apparel industries. Our discussion leaders introduced it as critical vocab for today’s reading.

My class rocked discussion today, making super astute connections across colonialisms and unpacking dense political and ideological entanglements in Indonesia. Spent a long time talking about the politics and power that athletes/surfers wield, too. I love teaching. ✨

Seattle-area friends: join me starting tomorrow 6:30-8 PM for an 8-wk community series. This is a space to get curious about settler-Indigenous relations and issues in our region and across Indian Country, and to develop advocacy and ally possibilities.
