Almost 15,000 rough sleepers have been helped into emergency accommodation since the start of the pandemic (1/7)
At the weekend, @RobertJenrick announced that we have accelerated our commitment to provide 6,000 units of accommodation for rough sleepers, with 3,300 of these becoming available in the next 12 months. This is backed by £433m of Government funding (2/7)
Our Rough Sleeping and Homelessness Advisers have been working with Councils to help shape local plans for supporting rough sleepers. I have now written to Local Authorities to ask them to set out their initial plans, including some key considerations: (3/7)
That as the pandemic continues they continue to take a health led approach, working with health partners on the response to the ongoing risk of Covid-19 during this next phase, understanding the particular vulnerability of many rough sleepers. (4/7)
That all move on options are considered, such as returning to friends & family and to find as many sustainable move on options as possible like working with housing assocs to increase the supply of move on accommodation and to consider moves into the private rented sector (5/7)
Support for physical and mental health is vital- we have asked councils to work with health partners to plan for continuity of care for people who move out of emergency accomm to support their ongoing physical & mental health, substance use, social care & housing needs (6/7)
We have a moral obligation to end rough sleeping and are using this unpresidented opportunity to help people rebuild their lives and prevent returns onto the streets #endroughsleeping (7/7)
