I know I have seen games go out of their way to promote an inclusion like gay/trans characters or visible minorities, and feels like a marketing gimmick. I think the fear of some is games being developed by checklist or focus group.
-
Could you give me an example?

Never honestly. All art in some sense is political, even if it’s not directly applied to today’s specific politics. I feel most who hate “shoehorned” politics just hate seeing their personal “beliefs” (ie usually their prejudices) criticized.

never. "shoehorned" is just a dog whistle for people who want every game to be Shooty McWhiteman who rescues Skinny McTitsmcgee.
-
Mctitsmcgee not bad... can I suggest a revision? Ms Tits McGee. It rolls off the tongue easier.

One of my top 10 favorite games ever is Bioshock, so I fucking adore political influence into games
-
Not to mention one of the biggest trilogies of recent years, the mass effect series, is entirely politics. Literally the game has politics as one of its core mechanics.

Never. They've been "shoehorned out" (if that's even an expression) often enough, but I never played a game where I thought its political content was out of place.
