This was not the first time Tewkunzi’s partner had physically hurt her. His physical, sexual, and emotional abuse had escalated throughout her pregnancy, which is common in domestic violence relationships.

Tewkunzi tried to leave during the attack, but her partner blocked the exit. He began choking her. Choking is a strong predictor of lethality, as DV advocates know all too well. Fearing for her life, Tewkunzi defended herself.

Medical records & photos from the day of Tewkunzi’s arrest indicated bruising on her neck from being strangled. The state still prosecuted her. An all-white jury found Tewkunzi, a Black woman, guilty. She was sentenced to 34 years.
