    There is the potential for significant rainfall amounts with Tropical Storm Nicholas that will lead to considerable to extreme urban and flash flooding. Do not drive through areas where water covers the roadway. Turn around and don't drown.

    As of the 10 PM advisory, Nicholas is now a hurricane with 75 mph winds as it rapidly approaches landfall along the central Texas coast. The system will quickly weaken as it moves inland on Tuesday. Heavy rain remains the primary threat across our area.

    I hope that no one dismisses this threat just because is not expected to become a hurricane. I’ll remind everyone that Ida caused significant problems all the way into the Northeast due to flash flooding and tornadoes.

    The ongoing storm recovery will be a compounding threat because homes are already damaged, people are displaced and storm debris could be blocking drainage systems, causing rainwater to accumulate more quickly than normal, which could enhance the flooding threat.

    Because of the heavy rainfall, flash flooding will be the greatest threat of this system. It also has the potential to cause river flooding in Southwest and Southeast Louisiana.

    4 PM Update on Tropical Storm Nicholas. Nicholas is a 65 mph storm and is expected to make landfall later tonight along the central TX coast. Heavy rainfall will be main concern for our area on Tuesday and Wednesday, and some localized flooding issues may occur.
