This! 🙌 JLo puts kids in cages center stage at the biggest show in the world as she sings 'Let's Get Loud' As her daughter emerges to sing 'Born in the USA', she appears draped in the Puerto Rican & American flag. Brilliant & Powerful

How about we condemn the fact that non-European cultures have been sexualized since the colonizers saw indigenous ppl and deemed their ways evil and pornographic? (5)

How about we talk about these two WOC using their platform to make a political statement? How about we talk about all the people they hand picked from Latin American countries to give them an opportunity as dancers, choreographers, costume designers, etc?(4)

How about we decolonize our view of women and sex and stop scandalizing two incredible performers who went above and beyond and showed us what it’s like to deliver on a half time show? These two women have worked harder than many mediocre men out there (6)

J-lo came out with the U.S flag then turned it around to reveal the Puerto Rican flag while her daughter sang “born in the USA”, with millions watching on fox. the POWER. The MESSAGE. Puerto Ricans are U.S citizens. Don’t forget us. Listen to us.

HELLO! Why are ppl talking about the 1 part of that game that wasn’t a problem and not the 100 things that r. Starting w/harmful stereotypes of Native Americans!? Followed by the men ramming their heads against each other? Continued by racism and classism? No? Pole dancing? Ok 🙄

History lessons •Pole dancing began 800 years ago by men wanting to show their athletic ability •Belly dancing a method to alleviate the pain of childbirth •Kids in cages method by politicians wanting to prevent the rise of immigrants •Sexualizing WOC a century long issue

I was shocked to see political choices like: - a Latina wearing an American flag that when opened & cast off shows the flag of a place it occupies & actively ignores - people performing in Spanish in an era where ppl are harassed for speaking it publicly - kids singing from cages

Now I'm disappointed that people don't realize Shakira wasn't just doing a tongue trick but a celebratory trill. I also didn't know until just now that she is Lebanese. That is so cool!

Shakira and JLo are incredible and that was such a fun performance and celebration! It was a fun treat to watch right after I turned in a paper minutes...or seconds to midnight. phew. I was about to have some logging into canvas issues and it was the worst timing.

You really have to understand how huge Shakira’s performance was for the Middle Eastern community. She had belly dancing, a mijwiz and a derbeke, performed “Ojos Asi” which was one of the few Shakira songs to have Arabic in it, did a Zaghrouta, all love on the biggest stage

Grateful for this thread. Also want to point out how important it is for BIPOC to record their own audiobooks as well, if they choose to, without someone else trying to read/narrate/tell their story for them.
