Freelance writers should be exempt completely from #AB5. Then you’re asking us to pay money to become LLC’s. This shouldn’t cost us anything, ideally.

You could actually be a sole proprietor

Yes, it's definitely a solid start. It's not an ending but it's at least a solid start.

Only if they give freelance writers an exemption from the $800 franchise tax all LLCs in California have to pay. Digital journalism doesn't pay enough for that.

Hi
@LorenaSGonzalez - there’s a wider issue than simply journalism here. Lots of educated, industrious ppl don’t get hired full-time because they’re#pwd. AB5 leaves a lot of us (across industries) in the cold after freelancing for years. I say this as a fellow progressive. -
AB5 doesn’t require anyone to be hired full time. It only requires the use of a W2. Can be very part time and remote. And I think that
#pwd must have the same opportunities to earn a good wage, sick time, disability and unemployment insurance & paid family leave as all workers! - Još 3 druga odgovora

It’s a start. But wholly unnecessary if the number one test for who should be an employee is IF they want to be an employee. There is zero justification for government to insert itself into a business arrangement that works for all parties involved.
-
Do we start that “test” with child labor? Minimum wage? Overtime? Or let the lowest bidder get the job a say forget labor laws... then we all get that standard

Quick question. What if you have been dropped by clients because of the initial reaction by businesses and therefore only have one or two left? Are you still “customarily engaged” in the profession?
