"One year on... the government must follow through on its promises and ensure that every member of our society has — regardless of income": president in today's urging gov't to get on with improving

  2. The government should stop all these half baked attempts to restrict judicial review. They should focus on not breaking the law rather than on making it harder for the courts to find them out.

  3. Parole Board have got release of murderer of Helen McCourt totally wrong. He continues to inflict the unspeakable cruelty of refusing to reveal where her body is. He cannot be trusted in his protestations of reform until he reveals the truth.

  4. Unfriendly journalists first. BBC next in line. Then Human Rights. Judges after that. Good politics, terrible policy. Awful for the future.

  5. “Everyone – including convicted criminals – has a right to serve the prison sentence they were given when they were tried by an independent judge, not one imposed at the whim of a politician playing to the public gallery.”

  6. This and Reith lectures will become the specious basis for government attempts to restrict JR. The courts have developed limits of their intervention into executive acts, on a case by case basis in a way that has public confidence. Complaints only ever come from the executive.

  7. Terr. sentencing should include release only if agreed by parole bd before expiry of term, and indeterminate sentences. Effective derad progs in prison urgently required. Don’t break retrospectivity rule. Instead introduce new TPIM measures for those not in new sentencing frame.

Am I missing something here? If, other things being equal, Amman had served his full sentence wouldn't he just have done the same thing next year? Whatever the answer is talking all tough on later release isn't it.

  9. Prison regimes for counter terrorism not adequate. Increasing length of sentences alone will not solve problem. Creating British Guantanamos risks entrenching prisons as terrorist academies, and radicalising many outside prison. More measures to deradicalise in prison required.

  10. Change the law. Currently it causes immense suffering for some people who are terminally ill and their families and provides no protection against abuse for the vulnerable.

  11. Time for an independent enquiry into the prosecution of rape cases. As the number of rapes rise, and prosecutions and convictions drop, a fundamental review of the criminal justice’s approach is vital.

  13. International practice shows introduction of assisted dying laws does not increase the abuse of the acutely vulnerable. The operation of these laws is invariably closely monitored and if there was an increase in abuse it would have been identified. It hasn’t.

  15. Brilliant article. Johnson included p.48 in Tory Manifesto not to persuade voters but to provide spurious legitimacy for clipping the judges wings. Never underestimate how affronted politicians are by lawyers and judges.

  16. In criminal trials the usual reason why defendants choose not to give evidence is because the questioning will reveal their guilt. Cabinet Ministers now as a matter of policy refuse to be questioned on the Today programme.

Leadership in HMPPS seems to consist of throwing front line workers under the bus and leaving the public with cut and paste statements from anonymous spokespersons. Grayling’s comments that it was the fault of a few operational staff rather than his policies are outrageous

  19. Incredibly impressive interview. Shows understanding for front line staff who made mistakes which led to his release. Describes, without shred of self importance, courage she showed during ordeal, and her determination not to let it ruin her life.
