Very often our landing zones are in beautiful, remote places and occasionally are so remote that a helicopter is required for balloon retrieval. Here’s our recovery team picking up a balloon to take back to Loon labs for analysis, reuse and recycling.

Our automated software helps our balloons navigate, doing what humans can’t; diving deep into weather forecast data to build maps that show a path through the changing winds. Below is one of these maps. The blue areas represent the fastest route from to .

This is a potential game changer with huge applications for and beyond. Afloat for 312 days, this platform can carry instruments and enable long time observations without the cost of having to go to space.

Our flight systems are closely monitored by engineers, but they navigate autonomously. It was both a surprise and a delight to discover that our balloons learned how to tack, just like a sailboat, moving back and forth to take advantage of optimal winds.

Think that connectivity from the is crazy? 30 yrs ago there were no mobile networks. 12 yrs ago there were barely any smartphones. One day soon we’ll look back & struggle to remember a time when there were no internet balloons.

The internet feels ubiquitous but it’s not — 3.8 billion lack access. Ground-based infrastructure like fiber has advantages but it doesn’t reach everywhere. We’re harnessing the communications sweet spot that is the to connect people across the world.
