Since we passed legislation legalizing the construction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs / in-laws) in SF, only 23 have actually been built! This is unacceptable. Part of it is because the legislation got 2 monkey wrench poison pills. First, it has to be within the existing building envelope. Second, it converts your SFH to a rent controlled property. Not advantageous to owner if you ever plan to rent main unit.
