Since we passed legislation legalizing the construction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs / in-laws) in SF, only 23 have actually been built! This is unacceptable. Building ADUs is one of the ONLY ways to build new rent controlled housing. My ADU working group legislation will cut through unnecessary red tape and help get these hundreds of units on the market ASAP. #endthebacklog
Part of it is because the legislation got 2 monkey wrench poison pills. First, it has to be within the existing building envelope. Second, it converts your SFH to a rent controlled property. Not advantageous to owner if you ever plan to rent main unit.
Unintended consequences of trying to “fix” legislation is often rendering the programs they establish unpalatable.
