Today, I declared this week as Essential Worker Week to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of our essential workforce. Our healthcare workers, first responders, grocery store workers, food workers and so many others have kept our City moving forward. #EssentiallyYoursSF

I deeply appreciate your leadership during this whole event, but as a grocery worker who works and lives in the city, it’s hard not to feel taken advantage of and coughed on as the city reopens too quickly. We’ve been running nonstop and are pretty well forgotten by society.
We’re more likely to get sick or exposed, and we’re less likely to receive any meaningful aid than ever. Please don’t let this week of performative acknowledgement be justification to move on. We need mental health aid, paid time off to subsidize our fatigue, we need help.
This is so performative when people are still sleeping outside in your city Mayor.
Recognize their contributions by mandating they are paid living wages, have access to healthcare and adequate sick time, and that they have housing to live here.

That’s nice. How about teachers? I watched a series where teachers travel 2 hours per day and a $44M dorm was built on-site as a solution. Priced out of the city. They’re essential long before Covid.
