Supervisor @ShamannWalton and I will lead the effort to redirect funding from the @SFPD to support the African-American community in the upcoming budget.
This week has highlighted the devastating impacts of police violence against African-Americans in this country. SF has made substantial progress on police reform and use of force in recent years, but we know there are structural inequities in our city that continue to this day.
In San Francisco, the average income for a black household is $31K, as compared with $110K for white households. Up to 19% of black children live in poverty. 35% of homeless San Franciscans are black, despite black people making up only 5% of the total population.
Since this pandemic began we have seen how different work environments, schools, neighborhoods, homes, & support systems combine to determine which communities are at the greatest risk of suffering both disease and economic damage. But this was also the case before the pandemic.
Reforming any single system, such as the criminal justice system or the police department, must go hand-in-hand with closing these disparities. Those who have been voiceless for too long are going to be at the table making these decisions that will impact their community.

In my opinion, defunding the police is the solution. We need the police to combat crime. We need instead implicit bias trainings, accompanied with policy changes and community engagements.
Do not extend prejudice against a profession to your own PD in response to atrocities they also abhor, committed by individuals in other PDs.
