Following Saturday night, it was important for the safety of our residents to ensure that we could prevent the violence and vandalism that had taken place, but we know that the overwhelming majority of people out protesting are doing so peacefully and we trust that will continue.

As I said at the rally at City Hall on Monday, I am Mayor of San Francisco, but I am a black woman first. I know what it is like to experience injustice, and as someone who grew up here I am well aware that we have our own legacy of racism to reckon with and rectify.

Residents and business owners in San Francisco pay the city taxes to get protection and peace of mind. The City officials failed. Residents and business owners are living fear, don’t know when and how their properties and persons will be violated and destroyed. Do Your Jobs!

I just want to come out and say that I think you’ve handled the COVID19 outbreak and this current situation with intelligence and sensitivity. It’s far from an easy time but you seem to me to be doing really well. Hope to see you at next year’s Dogfest.

I disagree. For a mayor to enact a curfew is, in my mind, a last resort kind of measure. That
