From the beginning of this pandemic, one of our biggest concerns has been spread in congregate living situations. We've seen this happen in countless other places throughout the country. It is now happening at MSC South, one of our shelters here in San Francisco.
MSC South usually has 340 people staying there. We have reduced the capacity over the past few weeks, and as of last night there were roughly 100 people remaining. Overall, 70 have tested positive, including 2 staff members.
We are moving the remaining individuals who have not tested positive to hotel rooms.
Those who have tested positive will remain at MSC South in quarantine and @SF_DPH is deploying staff there to provide medical treatment on-site.
While we've had early success in slowing the spread of coronavirus, I want to reiterate that we are not out of the woods yet. We've been preparing for situations like this and we're responding. But it is critical that people continue following the Stay Home Order.
If only you had listened to @DeanPreston @MattHaneySF @HillaryRonen weeks ago, and taken the appropriate steps to prevent this from happening. No one should be in shelters or on the street. Fill the hotels, now.
Move them back into the shelters and treat it as a situation where ALL have COVID19. Turn shelters into medical facilities.
