There are long-term safety improvements coming to Howard Street, and I am pushing to move those forward as fast as possible. But while we wait for these capital improvements, we need to make short-term safety enhancements, which I have instructed the SFMTA to do without delay.

Pushing for short-term safety improvements on high-injury corridors is exactly what I announced we would be doing earlier this week. Nothing will replace the life lost today, but we can prevent future tragedies by moving more quickly to implement street safety improvements.

Why can't we make the
@SF311 app actually prioritize blocked bike lanes and double parking rather than the current inexcusable state where it does nothing but log the data, as if the city doesn't know where enforcement is needed? -
You have in place a tech that could instantly improve safety for bicyclists and peds at no extra cost, but even in this supposed
#TransitFirst and#VisionZero city, you refuse to use it. DPT needs to prioritize enforcement of actual safety issues, not meters and street cleaning. - 1 more reply

The woman killed today was wearing a helmet. Anyone whose entire body was crushed beneath a truck would die - regardless of if they were wearing a helmet.

A good start would be to increase enforcement of double parking in bike lanes. Happens every day on Townsend street.

Everyday in every major avenue of traffic this happens. Sickens me.

We need 100x the traffic enforcement and ticketing of dangerous behavior. We also need safety fixes on all the streets/intersections where people have been injured for years, like 6th and Folsom where NOTHING was fixed after Amelie was killed this same way.
