(2/3) We need to look hard at our current billing practices, and until we come up with a plan that works for patients, we will not continue the practice of balance billing.

(3/3) In an emergency, people’s focus should be on getting help quickly, not on what hospital they should go to. Private insurance companies also need to be held accountable to actually pay for the healthcare for anyone they cover.

You forgot to mention that you and
@Scott_Wiener both voted to approve the pricing practices of the hospital for many years, including annual increases. -
Your action today is solely because Vox made this issue common knowledge and highlighted the hypocrisy of the Progressives who are in charge here.

Thank you Mayor Breed! Please make this retroactive to outstanding balances. The DPH got away w this unfair practice for much too long.

Super great news. I hope ZSFGH will also adjust these bills retroactively. They may be a small part of the hospital budget but are a real hardship for insured individuals who had every reason to think their care would be covered by the public hospital their tax dollars support.

Thank you for addressing this. When I was struck by a car downtown, random passersby advised me not to get in the ambulance even if I was insured. It really shouldn’t be that way.

Congrats that really does nothing, it’s a chain reaction of so my many other policies. Find your core, who are you’re frequent flyers , who need that medical attention the city needs to balance. Where does it lead you? Take a closer look within.

Would be helpful if you explained what balance billing is for those of us not in the know.

Short version: if you have health insurance it’s not accepted by SFGH and you have to pay full price, which can bankrupt most people if not burden them with unbelievable amounts of debt. The uninsured are cared for at a lower cost.
