Great job on this. We’ve been caught in nonsensical red tape for over a year. Owners who are willing to invest in creating housing should not have to deal with such an inefficient and costly process. Keep up the good work.

There are reasons for the backlog that reflect the restrictions and requirements in code or ordinance, and the staff available to review and permit the projects. Directing faster means relaxing the standards and adding staff. Is that really the expectation?

Technically true, but only a very small part — on the order of 5% — of the cost of rent can be attributed to rent control. I think that’s worth it for all the people it’s saved from displacement.
