Insane situation here at Newark Airport. They just told us all to evacuate and whole terminal scattered. Bags left behind. I initially thought it was an active shooter. Maybe a bomb threat. Confusion and chaos

Based on what I’m gathering, there was an argument between an employee and a passenger at the gate that for some reason escalated to someone yelling “Evacuate!” And that’s when the chaos ensued.

Based on what I’ve gathered, an Alaska Airlines employee saw 2 men she deemed suspicious and made a scene about it. Her fellow coworkers didn’t deem the men suspicious and the employee began to have a breakdown. She yelled “Evacuate!” at that point and the chaos ensued.

Aftermath: It turns out this false alarm/chaos had a ripple effect on air travel across the country, as it grounded planes at a hub and then left flight crews unable to work past their regulated hours. So I’m staying at Newark for the night, but thankful to be safe.

I really appreciate all of you checking in on me. It’s difficult to describe the emotional reaction that happens in a situation like that. Adrenaline/courage/terror all wrapped into one. Definitely brings perspective, too.
