2) As an educator, I know a lot of veterans and I know a lot of their stories. There are reasons for listing are myriad, but it’s very rarely that they want to fight. Mostly, they want an education and a good job. Mostly they have not been deployed into combat.

3) but when you are enlisted, things happen, and it’s not under your control. And allowing the right wing to parse who does and doesn’t count as a real veteran is a mistake. If you think attacking Buttigieg requires diminishing his service, think again.

Serving is serving. And being deployed to a war zone whether for one day or one decade ups the danger you are in. Casey Sheehan was killed his first day of deployment. His service, John Kerry's service, Pete Buttigieg's service...we should be grateful for it all & respect it.

I think that makes perfect sense. I also think a little more inspection of the claims about that service that a candidate for president is making is worthwhile. Now, does it need to be by a WSJ op-ed? No. Maybe an explainer to put it into context.
