Imo considering the gcodes, how the model is sliced, and conventional printer capabilities, uniquely serializing a printer on a part isn't very plausible. However, i think monitoring downloaders is very likely.
Not that it wouldn't be possible in some far distant level of printer capability. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of filaments being mixed with identifiable particulates, however--but the size and sales volume of individual filament packages makes that a dubious task as well.
They were already tossing this idea around in 2012-13. [https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/if-you-cant-stop-it-trace-it-personalised-forensics-and-3d-printing-15654/ …]pic.twitter.com/jKf5yfkv6u
This is less of an issue as most 3d printed gun designs are distributed as foss in widely downloaded torrent packs or stegonographically embedded in .jpegs.
Why do you suppose Linus just had to step down? He set-up broken encryption methods to guarantee file integrity on Git and a lot of the DD FOSSCAD packages are hosted on Github.
a well reputed torrent magnet link is different from a GitHub repository, but you're right, there will always be room for human interference/error. Nothing can be infallible so long as it is made by the hands of men, etc.
Not how it works. It's just a document file like any other.
All that means is you could embed a code that would fingerprint the printer a gun came from. Could be edited out since blueprints are free. And he could monitor direct downloads but the files are out there now. No way to track once Pandora's box is opened.
1/ I don’t think it was ever about the actual usefulness of the guns The liberator would crumble after 5 rounds And later projects were all about cnc milling existing guns into Aluminium It was mostly about giving the finger to the gov and forcing a decision between keeping up
2/ constitutional rights or killing them outright And it was a good gotcha This just seems strange, I mean yea he was an ancap guy but that’s taking it to the extreme And just after the uproar dies down and his files are temporarily barred he thinks getting an underage
3/ prostitute is a good idea? I don’t believe it, that’s too convenient Also, I’m pretty sure Snowden or assange had a similar story a while ago where they allegedly diddled a minor they had found on some dating app and paid them afterwards right when their “hype” died down
aye, and the printers themselves are easy to pwn as routers
meh, throw your lower in a fire afterward if you are concerned with some kind of hidden serialization (which would only identify the program used, not the firearm). There's a place for 3d printed firearms, along with other non-serialized home built firearms.
compared to what?
