Just look at the music. This era happily ended with anti-climatic soviet collapse, what looked like the victory of the West was actually its death, that's where the elegiac feeling of this period is coming from.

Tbf lingering spleen I described was mostly euro. Russian tanks and Pershings were all over the place, with recent memory of last suicide attempt of the continent. I gather from ameripopculture that life in US was like Spielberg's suburbia, "War games" more than "Blade Runner"
