possibly an oversight on this writer's part, but it can take upwards of 15 minutes to scramble depending on the defcon. on 9/11, we were at defcon 5 (15 minutes) and suddenly switched to defcon 3 (5 minutes), so it's entirely possible the F-15's were going at or near top speed.

assuming they took 10 minutes to get off the ground (defcon 4 startup time), that would mean they were travelling at 1147.5 mph.

You can go like 1800 in those things. What were they waiting for? An invitation? Even if you don't know the plane's intent the first step is to make visual contact, so you can let the pilot know he is way off course.
