T5. Let's talk about hospitals Why are they so eager to promote 3D mammograms? Does it give them a marketing advantage to say they have the latest tech? #3Dchat

Marketing and medical as it is touted as "Best View". Perhaps facilitating #sonograms as secondary. #3Dchat

T5. A cynical answer might be that once they invest in the machines, they need to recoup costs. #3Dchat

Not cynical…just reality… #3DChat Feels like we are in a #MedicalArmsRace and patients pocket book and our sky rocket healthcare costs are the result

They are eager because the data shows they can save your life by screening you for breast cancer. #3Dchat

It’s not a marketing advantage to promote 3D mammograms. It shows they aren’t subjecting their patients to outdated technology. Either hospitals keep up with the times or they should stop providing medical services altogether. #3DChat

These questions are always tricky. That’s why I recommend that patients research their breast imaging center & make sure it is accredited for breast imaging by @RadiologyACR to start. The decision for type of exam should be driven by evidence and quality not marketing. #3Dchat

T5. nowadays people see adds about 3D mammograms all over, and is sold as a way of new technology. People associate new diagnostic tests/treatments are better than old ones. So hospitals show 3D mammogram as a way of saying: we have the top notch tests. #3Dchat

If the hospital - or screening facility - invest $ in the new technology, they have to promote using it to justify and recapture the $. #MedicalArmsRace #3Dchat

T5. Hi I'm a radiologist at a community hospital and we have increased our cancer detection rate from 5.4 to 10.4 cancers/1000 screening mammograms with 2D vs 3D in the last several years and decreased our call back rates from 10.8% to 8.8%. This is why we prefer 3D. #3Dchat

No marketing with "socialized medicine" that we have here in Canada. Another perk!

The 5-year Breast Cancer survival rate in Canada is 88% v. USA at 99%. Not a perk when the lack of competition stagnates progress.
