It's a bass ackwards comparison -- different eras. What IS valid: American politics used 2 b restraint: Lincoln didn't seek 2 ABOLISH slavery in 1860, only prevent its spread. The modern Republican Party has no political restraints at all. No E Pluribus Unum, only Us vs Them.
