    6. Two takeaways here: (1) 2019 election is a much broader story than communication failure of the Left or ‘alienating’ stance on climate change & (2) the climate movement will not achieve necessary change - regardless of how it messages - without campaign finance reform

    5. There is a case for the climate movement reviewing how it advocates - like ang movement, we must grow and change so we can expand. However, difficult to see how any communication strategy can compete when microphones are at such different volumes

    4. While Labor & Coalition funds were matched, Clive Palmer’s intervention - the greatest in Aus history - meant more than $100m was targeted to keeping Labor out of the Lodge, and against any party advocating climate action. This dwarfed Labor and ’ combined funds

    3. In an electoral system shaped by compulsory voting, messaging platforms *matter* as much as content - size and reach. They are key to reaching and capturing the undecided voter. A neglected part of the 2019 election story is about how donors shaped those platforms

    2. The main narratives ’s defeat focus on failings of ‘the Left’ - communication and messaging strategies, incl. excessively complex tax reform and policy platforms; messaging on climate action that ‘doesn’t bring people with it’ etc.

How fossil fuel lobbying shaped the outcome of the 2019 election - this is big, and important reading while we try and make sense of and inertia on climate action. A thread /1

An advance copy of my article in the is now available online . I discuss the gendered patterns of interruption behaviour across a 2yr period in the Aus HCA - where female judges were twice as likely to be interrupted than their male colleagues

Even as koalas have become the face of the bushfire disaster - drawing donations internationally - logging in koala habitat continues. Distressing reports of bulldozers pushing bodies of starved koalas while ’s love affair with logging continues

Agree with the categorisation, but surprised by the figures for America - would be interested to see how they are replicated in Australia. From experience campaigning on climate action, my sense is the “Concerned” group is much larger & the “Alarmed” group much smaller.

Gas companies are the big winners from a federal-NSW energy deal purporting to fund renewable energy projects. And among them is one of the country's biggest political donors.
