  1. One of my favorite backyard buddies is this partially leucistic female house finch. Her white patches give her such a jaunty look!

  2. While out searching for eagles this weekend, I spotted this handsome Canada Goose x domestic goose hybrid hiding out with the rest of the geese. Greylag goose hybrid maybe? Cute guy!

I’m late to this, but happy ! American Alligators are a fascinating wetlands creature, and one of my favorites. Look at those mesmerizing eyes!

Tapping away! This Downy Woodpecker spent a lot of time in this particular tree questing for a meal. These woodpeckers are easy to locate from the tap-tap-tapping noises that echo through the trees.

Caught in the act! This Blue Jay and his friend routinely empty the feeder of peanuts, flying back and forth to cache their prizes for later.

Though it may look a bit spooky, there’s nothing wrong with this crow. He’s just showing off his nictitating membrane, an extra eyelid that birds have to protect and clean their eyes.

Close up of a crow perched at the top of a very small branch. The crow’s eye looks white because his nictitating membrane is covering the eyeball.

A tale of two (red) birds: Male House Finch poses like the gorgeous star he is, and male Cardinal hides likes the...cardinal he is. In any case, the contrast between the snow and their colors is lovely.

“Hello? Do you have any suet for me?” Adorable inquisitive downy woodpecker.

The snow was no problem for this female House Finch. Though the males are more flashy, I love her jaunty stripes!

La-la-la-la-la-la-la! I’d like to think this junco was practicing her scales. Or maybe she was catching snowflakes on her tongue?

Close up of a slate-colored dark-sided junco, with her beak open and her tongue out.

This crow tried (and failed) to intimidate the squirrels that were eating seed that had fallen onto the snow. He eventually gave up and left hungry.

Snowy days often bring birds into the feeders that I don’t usually see there—in this case, a rather regal mourning dove.

A mourning dove sits on a snow covered hanging platform feeder, and it’s lightly snowing.

In this edition of , he’s both hiding behind branches and laughing at me over his shoulder (or so I imagine 😅). He’s still gorgeous though.

I’m feeling a little tired of the snow this morning, so instead here’s a Brown Pelican enjoying bright Florida sunshine.

This Black-capped Chickadee was unbothered by the weather, catching tiny snowflakes on his bill and head.

I only noticed it a few weeks ago myself! A flock of them were in the tree at sunset, and the red on their backs looked actually glowing. Took me a bit to figure out they were house finches (none turned towards me) Bad photo, but it captures the glow.

A particularly vivid House Finch adds a much needed splash of color to winter’s drab palette.

Flowers are what first got me interested in photography. So for here are some of my early efforts. It was pre-SLR and pre-macro lens, but I still love the colors and texture.
