From November I’ll be spending lots of time in Durham, working on ciphers in manuscripts up to c. 1500. If you come across any kind of cipher or secret writing in medieval sources, I’ll always be interested to hear about it!

Interesting use of early manuscript waste. Here four parchment fragments are used to line a ca. 17th-century[?] embroidered silk purse. BPL MS q Med. 277

This thirteenth-century image depicts... ...anyone know? The text is in heavily abbreviated old French, often with just the first letters of words. A selection of images from the manuscript can be found here: https://bvmm.irht.cnrs.fr/mirador/index.php?manifest=https://bvmm.irht.cnrs.fr/iiif/8419/manifest …pic.twitter.com/sgC8WJReET

Question for
#twitterstorians who use@archetype_ink: I'm just starting out with my database, which involves no IDs of hands but lots of diff graphic symbols. To distinguish between the sets of symbols in diff MSS, do I invent a system of keywords, or is there a built-in way?Hvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. Breton Gospelbooks sometimes have...eclectic... illuminations. But one really interesting one is Angers, BM MS 24 (20), f. 7v, in which the head of Adam is buried under the cross from which a snake emerges, yet is subdued by Christ's blood trickling down the Cross.pic.twitter.com/bCm0PUYJBw

Also ‘7’ was another abbreviation for ‘and’ in medieval manuscripts, which is why it’s on the same keyboard key as ‘&’ !!

Perhaps someone here can help with with these marginal notes I found in Paris, lat. 1008 (f. 97r)? Could the first one be Greek? The second note seems to be 'angelorum'. On the page the practice of renouncing the devil during baptism is explained.pic.twitter.com/bx4e2IXFzo

"Whatever things we are accustomed to do, speak, or hear most often, these same things will necessarily return to our mind most often as though to their accustomed and proper place". These hands drawn in the margins of medieval manuscripts (manicules) usually point to interesting places in the text. Here, however, someone hasn't quite grasped how they work.pic.twitter.com/LxjTrOoOjQ

This early medieval manuscript was clearly torn / cut and sewn back together after the writing had already been copied. But parchment doesn't tear, and books were unlikely to be accidentally damaged so close to the spine. What could have happened? A medieval mystery
