How can pop culture influence the politics of protest? Here's my political science take on the fervor surrounding the and rap videos this past weekend for WaPo's :

Glad to see this work being done. Please share if you have information on visa/entry denials for Iranian and other MENA students. Harassment is a more nebulous factor. I once had a Turkish student detained at JFK for hours with questions about her religion, English ability

Excellent piece on questions of designating white supremacy groups with clear external links as foreign terrorist organizations in . Slightly jarring placement of the membership recruitment button though.

Happy to report the 17 students in my class yesterday now know what a zalghouta is, who uses it and why, and how major televised cultural events provide effective arenas for showcasing, celebrating, and contesting various identities.

Grateful to teach at , where I can insert J.Lo. and Shakira’s amazing Superbowl performance into a discussion of pop culture events as arenas for identity contestation in my Politics of Protest class, and then go see my colleague talk on Iran in a bar!

So glad to see my fabulous colleague will be giving a talk on Monday. I love the atmosphere of these events, and if there’s anyone you should be listening to in DC on Iran right now it’s her. Count me in!

Love this. It’s fun to introduce my Psychology and Decision-Making in Foreign Policy course by outlining the basic assumptions of (structural) realism and then outlining how we’ll unpack each one. Glad to see a big turnout for today’s first class!

I’ve been privileged to see this project develop through conference and workshop presentations, and, wow, is it excellent! Even if you care nothing about Turkey-West relations (wait, what’s wrong with you??), if you’re an IR scholar you need ’s new book!

To the (I'm guessing former) student who sent lovely flowers to my office with the note "thanks so much for writing me a letter of reference": You're very welcome and I wish you much luck in your application - whoever you are among the many letters I've recently written! :)

Exactly. Unprofessional, undemocratic, and unacceptable. I keep saying, I never thought I would see so many parallels between the US and Turkey - the country that’s the world’s #1 jailer of journalists, and is home to a host of free press-constricting dynamics

Love this. How many political scientists do various Sporcle quizzes regularly, secretly hoping they’ll be presented with a blank map at some point? Also, how many were obsessed with the fact that Pompeo can apparently just conjure one on demand?

At the fore in 24 hours are misused “earthquake taxes” meant for restoration/prep, officials focused on public opinion, and media coverage trying to show those in tents are “happy.” But also citizens’ courage + empathy. Tüm Türkiye’ye baş sağlığı, yaralılara acil şifalar dilerim

I was secretly hoping for this and somehow it happened! To be able to get a weekly arts/culture perspective on Turkey from the great is to have a unique window onto its politics and society as well as its music etc. Well done !

I think/hope others feel this way, but given current events I’m especially excited to be teaching my Psychology and Decision-Making in Foreign Policy + Politics of Protest in Europe and Eurasia courses this term. So much material to draw from. Bring on students!
