I’m utterly exited to share my work with the world! Although there are only two authors many more were involved. Thanks Mikawa lab

Read Embryology course alumnus Lisandro Maya-Ramos’ publication on vertebrate gastrulation. The paper reports on a role for midline programmed cell death in regulating ipsilateral migration of cells during gastrulation.

At second look for IM . Advice from on how to deal with non-constructive feedback: turn it around and say “thanks for the motivation”.

Programmed cell death at the midline (blue arrows) is what prevents cellular crossing (SEM imaged captured at during the 2013 Embryology course with and as directors).

Here you can see that early in cells from left and right sides remain on their ipsilateral side, primarily.

In bilateral gynandromorphs left and right sides remain separated through out life (aka yellow and white colors dont mix). In our recent publication we find that cells are instructed to not cross the midline during early development.

We were lucky to hear this story first-hand from Takashi at CNIC. A new mechanism for cell lineage compartmentalization! Programmed cell death along the midline axis patterns ipsilaterality in gastrulation

This work demonstrates the dependence of normal development on programmed cell death during the gastrulation stage. Science, this issue p. 197

Maya-Ramos and Mikawa examined the mechanism that prevents the crossing of cells between sides. Using chick embryos, they show that cellular mixing between sides is prevented by a barrier at the embryonic midline that involves programmed cell death and the extracellular matrix.

Hey check out This Week in Science … Apoptosis prevents left-right crossing: Animals generally display a bilateral body plan, with symmetry between the left and right sides.
