    5) The number of tests being performed each day in China is truly impressive. How long can this pace (and supply) keep up?

    4) Controlling this outbreak will require the time/resources to monitor and test close contacts of known cases, not just identify those with severe disease. This seems a long ways off in China but has been pretty successful so far in other countries.

...Once testing is rapid after symptom onset, to allow early isolation/treatment of positive cases, the hope is that new cases numbers will start to drop.

    3) Widespread community spread will continue if hard hit areas are still full of patients trying to be seen by a doctor (as currently seems to be the case)...

    2) Would love to see more about the date of symptom onset vs. the date of positive test to get a sense of how close/far the hard hit areas are from getting on top of the case load. The system is probably too overloaded for this type of tracking right now though.

Thoughts on today’s numbers: 1) Another huge increase in China with 3887 new cases, still led by Wuhan and Hubei Province. Even with the new hospital space that’s an overwhelming burden for one city to manage

Important update on human to human transmission here, the most widely noted case of asymptomatic transmission actually did have some symptoms. This is good news for disease control and I’m glad the record will be corrected!

The identification and characterization of a novel coronavirus associated with the recent outbreak of respiratory illness in China reveals similarities with SARS coronaviruses, according to a study published in Nature.

If you want to hear more abt this paper, which suggested that what we know now as could become reality, and talked to abt it on in 2015. It’s ironically titled ‘It’s not 2.0”.

Another huge increase from China tonight (2590 new cases, 45 deaths). Even with new hospitals going up, it's an overwhelming number of patients to treat. Severe disease seems to develop late in infection so the bed space (ICU space?) problem is only going to get worse.

Two thoughts on this case report 1) so much credit to the patient for being aware and taking appropriate action after developing symptoms and 2) props to for leading the mouse studies that showed remdesivir is efficacious against many coronaviruses!

Great points here. We’re much better at reacting to emergencies than maintaining global screening and prevention efforts.

So, so fast. Glad the world is aware and sharing so much information this time.

So much this. 1. Masks don’t help the way most people think they do. 2. There is no need for home PPE right now. 3. Don’t waste supplies that medical providers and scientists might actually need. 4. Fearmongering - don’t do it.

Bad news, glad this case has been discovered now so that contact tracing can start. I can understand the fear but effective public health measures rely on a collective sense of responsibility. (Plus doctors can do their best work when they have all of the facts!)

Massive amounts of work being done in screening laboratories and hospitals, the world needs to recognize this effort.

No decrease in new cases today, but it does seem like China is doing a great job in identifying and testing.

Due to the emergence of 2019-nCoV and the rapid response by the coronavirus community, ASV will have a workshop dedicated to 2019-nCoV research. Abstracts will be accepted for this topic Feb 10 - May 1.
